Bird cage craftsman

Uncle Choy, one of the few remaining bird cage craftsmen. Uncle started learning the craft from his own Uncle when he was 12. He eventually followed one of the five renowned Masters to learn the craft. More than 60 years on, I found his store in the middle of the bird market in Prince Edward. Uncle used to chop bamboo shoots one by one in a quest to make the perfect bird cage. Nowadays he buys ready made bamboo shoots from China.. He spends most of his time now repairing cages. "Too many requests!"'he says. He paints each of the bird cage parts and then places them in the cupboard to dry. For a bird cage made by the master, it could fetch more than a couple of hundred thousand dollars!
